How to transfer PS4 saved data and games to PS5

If you have purchased a new PS5, you may want to transfer your games and saved data from your PS4 to PS5.

There are several ways to do this from PS4 to PS5.

  • Migration via external HDD or USB expansion storage
  • Migration via Wi-Fi
  • Migrate via PS Plus Cloud Storage

Migrating your PS4 data will not overwrite or delete your data.

Migrating data from PS4 to PS5

External HDD and Expansion Storage

Simply connect the USB expansion storage device used for PS4 to PS5 to copy game data.

It is faster to copy games for PS5 from the USB expansion storage than to re-download them.

It is the easiest and quickest way to transfer save data externally.

Via Wi-Fi

For games stored on the internal hard drive, data can be migrated via Wi-Fi.

When migrating data this way, you must start both PS4 and PS5 at the same time.

From the PS5 screen, go to

Settings>System>System Software>Data Transfer

Select the "Data Transfer" option.

  • Only your data can be transferred. You cannot transfer other users' data.
  • Transferring data does not delete data from your PS4.
  • Data on the USB expansion storage will not be transferred.
  • Make sure that your PS4 is turned on and that your PS4 and PS5 are connected to the same network.
  • Connecting over a wired LAN will speed up the transfer.

Once the connection is established, the data on the PS4 will be selected and the transfer will begin.

PS Plust Cloud Storage

PS Plus online storage allows you to save your game save data to the cloud so you can continue playing on other consoles on which the game is installed.

If you are a PS Plus subscriber, you can access the data stored in Online Storage from your PS5.

If you have accessed your online storage from PS4, you can access it from PS5 as well.

Cloud storage is limited in capacity; you can store up to 100 GB on PS4 and 100 GB on PS5.
