How to mute the PS5 microphone from the controller and how to mute it permanently

This article describes the procedure for muting the microphone from the PS5 DualSense controller.
The PS5's DualSense controller comes standard with a microphone, allowing you to enjoy games via voice chat without the need for a headset or other equipment. Although there are some compromises to be made in terms of sound quality, it is still convenient to be able to voice chat easily without peripheral equipment.
With PS5, since voice chat can be easily turned on, it is possible that "the sounds of daily life are being overheard before you know it". Be very careful about turning the microphone on and off.

Mute the microphone

The procedure to mute the microphone on PS5 is simple.

To mute the microphone, press the button located just below the PS button on the DualSense controller.

When the button is pressed, it will light up orange. This is the only way the controller will no longer pick up sound.
When lit, the microphone is muted.

When the microphone is muted, a shaded microphone appears in the upper right corner of the PS5 screen.

How to turn off the microphone permanently

At this time, there does not appear to be a way to completely turn off the microphone audio on the PS5 at all times.
Therefore, we will introduce two alternative methods to turn the microphone off (or something like that) at all times.
Set the microphone status to "mute" when logging in.
Adjust the microphone level to zero input volume

Set the microphone state to "mute" when logging in

When you log in to PS5, the microphone is always "on" by default. Therefore, you must press the mute button to switch to mute each time you log in.
To prevent accidentally forgetting to press the mute button, switch the microphone state to mute when logging in.

"Settings" > "Sound" > "Microphone" > "Microphone state when logging in" > "Mute".
By switching to "mute," the microphone will be muted by default when you log in.

Adjust the microphone level to set the input volume to zero.

You can also adjust the microphone level to mute the microphone at all times.
Go to "Settings" > "Sound" > "Microphone" > "Adjust Microphone Level" > "Set Microphone Level to Zero (leftmost)."

By setting the microphone level to zero, the microphone will not pick up any sound even when it is turned on.
When the microphone is needed and "the microphone does not recognize voice", it is a good idea to check the microphone level first.

Mute the entire PS5 system.

The DualSense controller allows you to mute the entire PS5 system audio, not just the microphone.
This is useful when you need to answer an urgent phone call, for example, because you can mute not only the microphone sound but also the sounds from games and other devices.
To mute the entire system audio of the PS5, press and hold the mute button on the controller. When the orange light is flashing, all sounds are muted.
