How to improve voice chat echo (echo, howling) problem in PS5

When playing online games while conducting voice chat on PS5, you may hear your microphone voice echoing (howling).
Many people may become annoyed because they can hear their own voice in addition to the voices of the people they are playing with, making it difficult to hear.
If the problem is only on your side, the echo may still occur on the side of the person you are voice chatting with.
This problem may not be on the PS5, but on the microphone itself.
If it is a problem that only you can tolerate, you can't ignore the annoyance to the other side either.

How to improve the echoes that occur with the PS5 microphone

Reduce the sensitivity of the microphone

Modern high-performance microphones may be too sensitive.
A microphone with high sensitivity will transmit even the slightest shock or breath as noise to the other party.
Since PS5 allows you to adjust the microphone level, you may want to try reducing the sensitivity.
This will help improve crackling and echoes.

Settings → Sound → Microphone → Adjust Microphone Level

This microphone level adjustment is also reflected when simultaneously recording audio with PS5's built-in capture function.

Output volume is too loud.

If the game sound is output through the speakers, the microphone will pick up the audio.
As a result, users who are playing together online can hear the game sounds.
In this case, we recommend simply turning down the volume or connecting earphones or headphones.
If you often play using voice chat, you may want to use a headset with an integrated microphone.

Changing the output device

When you connect a microphone or headset to your PS5, be sure to change the output device from the settings.

Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Output Device → Change to the connected headset.

This will cause audio to be output to the connected headset instead of being output from the monitor or TV.
If this setting is troublesome, you may want to turn on "Automatically switch output device".
Settings → Sound → Audio Output → "Automatically switch output device: On"

The microphone on the DualSense controller is set to mute.

The PS5 DualSense controller has a built-in microphone.
If you are using this microphone for voice chat, please check if it is not muted.
The following article explains the controller's microphone settings.

Turn down the volume on the headset.

Echoes can sometimes be improved by turning down the volume on the headset.
If the microphone is located close to the output of the headset, it may pick up audio.
You can adjust the volume using the PS button on the controller, or some headsets allow you to adjust the volume on the headset itself.

Check the input device for the microphone.

If you have a headset connected, check to see if the input is coming from the controller.

PS button → Microphone → Select the connected headset.

Reset the controller

Resetting the controller may solve various problems related to the DualSense controller.
Insert the pin into the small hole on the back of the controller and press and hold for 5 seconds.

Once it is reset, a pop-up message will appear on the PS5 and the reset is complete.
